Bodies in Motion developed from an invitation to make work in response to the archives of Margaret Morris, a 20th century Scottish dancer, choreographer and founder of a holistic system of dance, movement and exercise training. The work détournés footage from a 1973 educational film narrated by and starring Margaret Morris, who demonstrates her system of movement throughout the film despite being in her 80s at the time of filming.
Throughout the film archive footage is cut to pulsing pop and electronic music, punctuated with images from the archive and amateur film of students at a rural Scottish college performing a Morris routine on the lawn. Moments of tension between movement and stillness gesture towards the tension between the collectivity of moving together and solitariness of individual endeavour, between Morris’ poised presentation of self and a restless, unknowable inner life.
